What "organic" means
Organic psyllium husk is grown and processed under a certified organic standard, such as India's NPOP, the US National Organic Program (NOP) or the EU organic regulation. Synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are not used. The certification covers the farms and processors, is audited, and requires each shipment to be documented so it can be traced.
What "conventional" means
Conventional psyllium husk is grown with standard farming practices, which may include agrochemicals, and carries no organic certification. It still has to meet the food safety and residue limits of the country it is sold in, so ask for residue test reports whichever product you choose.
Side by side
| Organic | Conventional | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Certification | Certified organic, audited across the chain | No organic certification |
| Shipment paperwork | Organic certificate, plus a transaction or import certificate where your market requires one | Standard export documents |
| Residue testing | Still worth doing | Essential, against your destination's limits |
| Labeling | Can carry organic claims when the whole chain is certified | Cannot carry organic claims |
How to decide
- If your product is sold as organic, you need organic husk.
- If your customers or retail channel ask for organic, as many US and EU natural channels do, choose organic.
- If price matters most and organic is not part of your claim, conventional can be the better fit.
- If you are unsure, start with a sample of each and compare them in your formulation.
Certified organic describes how the product was grown and handled. It is not a promise of zero residues, and conventional husk is not unsafe when it is tested against the limits of its market.
Documents to ask for
- A copy of the organic certificate, showing that its scope covers psyllium husk.
- A transaction certificate for each shipment. For the EU this is the Certificate of Inspection issued through TRACES, and for the US it is an NOP import certificate.
- A COA for the batch, and a residue test report.
We supply both organic and conventional psyllium husk. Tell us which you need and we will confirm the certificates that apply.
