How to choose a psyllium husk grade

Choosing a grade comes down to three questions: how pure it must be, how white it must look, and what you can spend. This guide shows how to answer each.

Purity: what 95%, 98% and 99% mean

Purity is the share of pure husk in the product. The rest is mostly fine seed fragments and other extraneous matter. A higher number means a cleaner, more concentrated husk, and usually a higher price.

  • 95% is a dependable standard grade for dietary supplements, food and baking where cost matters.
  • 98% suits dietary fiber products, cereals and bakery mixes. The Super White version is chosen where appearance matters.
  • 99% is the high-purity choice for supplement powders, capsules, sachets and pharmaceutical products.

Whiteness: when color matters

Whiteness describes the color of the husk. Super White is lighter and has fewer dark specks than Regular White, and Average White sits below Regular. Color does not change purity, so a 99% husk can be Average, Regular or Super White.

Whiteness matters most where the husk shows in the finished product: drink powders, gluten-free baking and premium supplements. It matters much less in capsules, where the husk is hidden.

  • Form and particle size: whole husk or powder, and the mesh you need.
  • Swell volume: how much the husk swells in water, a key functional measure.
  • Moisture and ash limits.
  • Organic or conventional. See our guide to the difference.
  • Packaging: our standard is 25 kg polypropylene bags, and custom packaging is available.
  • Documents: a COA for each batch, plus any certificates your market needs.
